How do I find my clan or family tartan?
Start with your surname. Most Scottish clans have one or more registered tartans — search the Scottish Register of Tartans by surname or clan name. If your name has no direct clan affiliation, district tartans (e.g., Highland, Caledonia) and national tartans are an excellent and widely accepted alternative.
What is a clan badge, and do I need one?
A clan badge is a plant or emblem historically associated with a Scottish clan, often worn as a brooch or on a bonnet. It is a traditional complement to clan tartan, but entirely optional. We offer a curated selection of clan badge brooches alongside our kilts.
Can I wear a tartan if I have no Scottish heritage?
Absolutely. District tartans, universal tartans (such as Black Watch or Royal Stewart), and fashion tartans are open to all. Tartan is a celebrated textile tradition welcomed around the world.
Kilt Types
What is the difference between a tartan kilt, a utility kilt, and a hybrid kilt?
Tartan kilt: The traditional eight-yard or five-yard pleated kilt woven in clan or district tartan. Best suited for formal occasions, Highland games, weddings, and ceremonial wear.
Utility kilt: A modern, work-inspired design typically made from cotton canvas or denim with cargo pockets. Durable, practical, and ideal for everyday or casual wear — no clan affiliation required.
Hybrid kilt: Combines a tartan front apron with a utility-style body (usually cotton or poly-cotton) for those who want heritage aesthetics with modern practicality. A popular choice for Highland festival-goers and casual events.

What materials are Tartan Heritage kilts made from?
Our traditional kilts are woven from pure new wool (typically 13–16 oz weight), which drapes beautifully, holds pleats well, and regulates temperature naturally. Utility and hybrid kilts use 100% cotton or poly-cotton blends for durability and ease of care. Material details are listed on each product page.
Is wool itchy or uncomfortable?
High-quality worsted wool — as used in our kilts — has a smooth finish that the vast majority of wearers find comfortable against the skin. Wearing a kilt hose or kilt liner beneath is a traditional practice that also adds an extra comfort layer if preferred.
Care & Cleaning
How do I care for a wool kilt?
- Airing: After wearing, hang your kilt vertically and allow it to air out for at least 24 hours before storage. Wool is naturally odour-resistant.
- Dry cleaning: We recommend professional dry cleaning for traditional wool kilts to preserve pleats and sett alignment.
- Spot cleaning: For minor marks, use a damp cloth with a small amount of gentle wool-safe detergent. Blot — do not rub.
- Storage: Store folded (not hung) in a breathable garment bag with cedar blocks to deter moths. Avoid plastic bags.
How do I care for a cotton or utility kilt?
- Machine wash on a cool, gentle cycle (30°C / 86°F).
- Tumble dry on low or line dry. Remove promptly to minimise creasing.
- Iron on medium heat if needed, following the grain of the fabric.
Sizing
How do I measure for a kilt?
Kilts are sized primarily by waist measurement (taken at the natural waist, typically 1–2 inches above the navel) and length (measured from the natural waist to the centre of the kneecap). Both measurements should be taken over a light shirt with a soft tape measure.
Where should a kilt sit and fall?
A properly fitted kilt sits at the natural waist and falls to the centre of the kneecap — not above or below. The apron should hang flat, and the pleats should drape cleanly at the back.
What if I am between sizes?
Size up. Kilts can be taken in by a tailor but cannot easily be let out. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering and we will advise based on your measurements.

What is your return policy?
We accept returns on unworn, unaltered items in original condition within 30 days of delivery. Custom or made-to-measure kilts are non-returnable unless there is a manufacturing defect. Full details are on our Delivery & Returns page.
What if my kilt does not fit?
We offer exchanges for a different size subject to stock availability. Contact our team within 14 days of delivery to arrange an exchange. We recommend double-checking your measurements against our size guide before ordering to avoid any inconvenience.
