Brogue shoes originated from a basic Scottish and Irish shoe-style which was perforated to allow water to drain from them if the wearer crossed wet terrain. Again to allow quicker drying, ghillie brogues are traditionally made without the tongues seen on modern brogue shoes and have long laces which wrap around the leg, avoiding the tie in the laces becoming wet and muddy.
